Garden Sculptures and Statues
Garden sculptures and statues can help to enhance any garden area, and complete the overall look that the home owner is trying to achieve. There are several different sculptures to choose from depending on the taste of the owner. Typically you will find numerous plants, trees, and shrubs in the garden, however, people now want more. Garden sculpture has become very popular, and knowing what to choose can be daunting.
No matter what size the garden is, having a center piece is the perfect way to complete the overall look of the outside space. The garden sculptures and statues can be found in several different materials, and whatever one is chosen will need to compliment the remaining elements of the garden. Having the right garden sculpture with enhance the area, however, having the wrong sculpture will make the garden garish.
The garden sculptures and statues can be a huge range of different designs, and there is very little that hasn’t been produced. Popular styles of garden sculpture include Greek statues, hard carved gargoyles, and striking metal masterpieces. Whether the home owner wants to play it safe with ornamental bird baths and planters, or be extravagant with their taste there is something for everyone.
When choosing the right garden sculpture there are several things that need to be considered. The homeowner should look at the size of the garden, and the overall design. Not all gardens will suit elaborate and impressive garden sculptures and statues. Some will look better with smaller, more subtle pieces that will enhance the existing features.
If the wrong garden sculpture is chosen it will retract all of the beauty that it holds, and it will sit uncomfortably in the garden. The overall theme of the garden has to be chosen first before any garden sculptures and statues are bought and placed. If the garden is traditional in style and theme, placing a very modern garden sculpture will be a bad choice.
Often the garden sculptures and statues are placed to enhance a specific area, or feature of the garden. If a water feature is in a dominate area having a garden sculpture that enhances it is ideal, however, placing something like a huge Buddha will look strange. Every element of the garden has to be considered, and it should flow naturally from one area to the next. If the garden sculptures and statues are too large they will take away any natural beauty the garden has.
Often the size of the garden sculptures and statues is the biggest mistake that is made, and far too many times the garden sculptures are not in proportion to the size of the garden. Another common mistake is to place far too many garden sculptures and statues in the area. The garden can quickly become a show room for all of the statues rather than a tranquil garden with some carefully placed garden sculptures.
Although better quality garden sculptures and statues will cost more, they will look better, and last longer. The statues will need to stand in the garden throughout the whole year and withstand all weather conditions. Taking the time to purchase the correct garden sculptures and statues will ensure that in many years to come the statues will be standing proudly in the garden.

Suzhou Travel ? Humble Administrator’s Garden
The Humble Administrator’s Garden is the largest of Suzhou’s four classical gardens and the only one with out a tea house.
History
The origin of the Humble Administrator Garden’s history can be traced back to the late 8th century during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) when it was the residence of scholar Lu Guimeng. During the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) the garden became the monastery garden of the Dahong temple.
The garden was “appropriated” (legally stolen) by Wang Xiancheng, a senior public servant who not surprisingly was under investigation by the secret police of that time. Most likely for fraud, embezzlement, abuse of power and stealing gardens. Wang Xiancheng had the Humble Administrator’s Garden built over the top of the old temple and monastery garden.
Wang is said to have built the garden so he could live a humble life there gardening, planting trees and tending to vegetables. Considering that the garden is said to cost a boat load of silver and taken 16 years to make, there is very little humble about it.
Ironically Wang’s son had to pawn the garden to pay his gambling debts. Since then the garden changed owner ship many times and was broken up over time with the eastern section sold in 1631 and the central section sold in 1738. Each section of the garden was extensively renovated by its new owners. The present division of the garden into eastern, middle and western sections is based on the gardens original break up in 1631 and 1738.
It was not until the liberation of China in 1949 that the three separate parts of the garden were united.
Grounds & Layout
The Humble Administrator’s Garden is largest of the Suzhou classical gardens with an area of 5.2 hectares. The size and scope of the garden makes it feel more like a decent sized park than a classical garden. The combination of ponds, bridges, islands and buildings and the way they are all interconnected is very well done.
]]>
Eastern Section – This section dominated by hills, stretches of grass, and bamboo and pine forests with winding streams running through it. The main attractions here are Cymbidium Goengii Hall, the Pinery Lawn, the Celestial Spring Pavilion and the House of Sweet Smelling Rice.
The Celestial Spring Pavilion houses a small well and is named after the well’s spring water which is meant to taste very sweet.
Pinery Lawn has a little open bungalow and a deck with chairs that looks exceedingly comfortable and inviting. Naturally this area is off limits of to tourists.
The house of Sweet Smelling Rice is a rest area containing classic furniture and has a China Post Kiosk. No one has been able to tell me where this name comes from. I’m guessing this building used to be the kitchen/restaurant for the garden.
Central Section – This area is the heart of the garden and dominated by ponds and interconnected islands. The main building here is the Hall of Distant Fragrance. In summer the gardens lotus flowers are in bloom and the fragrance from those flowers can be smelt in the Hall of Distant Fragrance. The gold fish in the ponds here are enormous and in very large numbers. There are many little pagodas in this area that have tables and chairs and are ideal for picnics.
Western Section – This section is dominated by a very large hall that has been divided by a gigantic screen into two parts, the 19 Camellias Hall and the 36 pairs Mandarin Duck’s Hall. Also in this section is the Bonsai Garden and the Mountain In the View Tower.
Mountain In the View Tower stands on a little peninsula on an island on the west side of the garden. The name of this tower comes from a verse by poet named Tao Yuanming.
The Bonsai Garden holds over 700 Bonsai plants and represents Suzhou style Bonsai which is one of the four leading styles of Bonsai plants in China.

Getting There
The Humble Administrator’s Garden is in the centre of Suzhou city just south of the train station and right next to the Lion Grove Garden. You can get to the garden by tourist buses 1, 2 and 5 and public buses 178, 202 and 309.
Suzhou city is not very large so if you are already in the inner city, you can easily walk to Humble Administrator’s Garden.
Tickets, hours and time needed
With a ticket price of 70rmb, the Humble Administrator’s Garden is the most expensive attraction in Suzhou. The high price is most likely due to the size of the garden and the high maintenance costs. This price also includes a free guide if you are not a member of a tour group and entry into the Bonsai garde.
The garden is open from 7:30 to 5:30 and you can easily be in the garden for half a day enjoying it. 2-3 hours is the minimum time I would recommend to make the most of this garden. I suggest you pack some food and drink and find a spot in the garden for a delightful lunch or snack.
Deciding Which Kind of Garden Is Best For Your Landscape
Gardens are as old as civilization. They always provide hours of pleasure to gardeners and garden enthusiasts alike. Preparing the landscape properly for your garden beds, will allow you to enjoy the additional colors and plants your garden will provide you for years to come.
Gardens with an abundance of flowering plants that bloom over a long period can increase the quantities and types of pollinating and native insects. Insects are usually attracted to plants that provide an abundant harvest of nectar and pollen. The sugars in nectar give insects their energy while the pollen is abundant in protein and fats, which is what bee babies need to grow. Certain gardens are for decorative purpose only, and others produce food crops. Flower gardens blend plants of varying heights, colors, textures, and fragrances to enchant interest and overwhelm the senses.
Usually, rain gardens are planted with an assortment of perennial native plants, that are designed to slow, capture, and infiltrate rain. Native plants are a solid choice for their drought resistance, and they are best adapted to soil and temperature conditions in a particular area. They also will attract butterflies and birds. Which are always a delight to watch.
French gardens are always formal and are usually the type of gardens found at large homes, hotels, theatres, and other attractions. French gardens are laid out in specific geometrical and symmetrical patterns that usually follow a grid. And many of these gardens have mazes of hedge and topiaries, or plants and bushes cut to resemble animals, people, or shapes. More formal French gardens were very popular landscape designs used frequently by the English nobility to dress up their country homes. It was not at all uncommon to see a specific and ornate French garden in the middle of the English countryside.
Chinese gardens are wonderful places for peace, study, meditation and relaxation, but they can also be great spots to just enjoy a conversation with a friend, spend time with the family or get some exercise. Be sure to explore one when visiting a city lucky enough to possess a Chinese garden.
Japanese gardens are becoming more and more popular although they can be difficult to do if you don’t have enough space in which to work with. Japanese gardens will have a tiny structure at the center of the garden, either a home or a teahouse which looks out over the rest of the garden. Japanese gardens utilize elemental designs that mostly feature rocks, water in the form of a brook or a lake, and a lantern or lighted feature is used in the garden, as well as a bridge or stepping stones.
Tropical gardens are popular because they are often full of exotic plants with beautiful rich colors and thick heavy foliage. These gardens are amazing and will be a difficult kind of garden to create due to the delicate tropical plants that only thrive in very precise conditions. Maintaining a tropical garden is a bit like having a salt water fish tank — both are exploding with color, they are exotic and mysterious, and both require a lot of time, knowledge, and effort to keep alive.
Victorian gardens are also very popular, particularly with more seasoned gardeners. These gardens can incorporate many types of plants and flowers and may also have stone statues, cherubs or gargoyles, an abundance of old style era roses, colored and glitzy balls and benches of stone or footpaths.

Keep your garden beds mulched and weeded
First and foremost of course, is to make sure that your garden beds are mulched and weeded regularly. This may sound simple – and it is! – but makes a big difference to the appearance of your home.
Whatever size garden you have, if you regularly weed the garden beds, weeding won’t be such a chore. Try weeding for just 15 minutes each day – your garden beds will never look out of control!
Finish off your garden beds with garden edging
Now that your garden beds have lost their weeds, its time to finish them off neatly with garden edging. Garden beds that simply fade away look unfinished and messy. Garden edging will give your garden bed definition and give your garden a “finished” look.
For a simple and easy way to refresh the look of your house and garden replace or install some timber garden edging. You’ll need something flexible, that can curve naturally with your garden beds, or run as straight as they do.
Garden edging is perfect for your vegetable garden beds too. A popular design idea, you can now bring the level of your vegetable garden beds higher and really let your veggies flourish!
Install a garden arch
With a garden arch, the entry to your garden is perfectly framed. Grow your favourite creeping plant onto the garden arch trellis and see the admiring glances from your neighbours.
If you have separate areas of your garden, placing a garden arch between the two areas is the perfect way to aesthetically divide them. Create a feeling of “arriving” as you step through the garden arbor from one section to another.
Add some planter boxes filled with colour
Planter boxes offer great flexibility. You can move them when you need to, and fill them with seasonal plants that brighten any area. Timber planter boxes are the best, as they will match the natural ambience of your garden.
For those living in apartments or units, there’s rarely much room for a garden. But the benefit of growing your own herbs, vegetables and flowers is priceless. With planter boxes, you can enjoy a garden no matter where you are!

Herbal gardening is wonderful since the herbs can be grown in a variety of ways. Plant a container garden for you deck or patio for great colors, different textures and super aromas. Or if you have limited space, become an inside kitchen gardener and plant your herbs on a windowsill or in a window box.

Especially if you are a beginner, I would recommend using the small plants from the garden center.
Go to a reputable garden center to purchase you herbs. Inspect your herbs closely to make sure they are healthy. One infected plant can ruin your whole herbal garden. When using the small herbs from the garden center you will be able to harvest your herbs much sooner. When you take the herbs out to be planted in the herbal garden, gently remove the plant from the pot and loosen the soil around the roots. Place the herb in the spot you have chosen or the container that you have prepared. Cover all of the roots with soil and gently tamp down. Give your new herbs plenty of water checking the moisture each day. Never let the soil dry out but don’t make your herbs roots too wet. If you are planting a container garden remember that the dirt in a container will dry out more quickly then the ground. You might find that the herbs will droop for a couple of days. Don’t fret that is shock but they will recover.
Once you have learned the herbs growth patterns you can start pinching off to get a bushier herb. When you first start out, keep a journal for your herb garden to keep track of each herbs strengths and weaknesses. After you get to know your herb garden you will be able to tell when the plants need attention.
Over the centuries herbs have evolved into very hardy plants. Once you herbal garden is established it will need very little care. To hold moisture for the herb longer, mulch around the plants. This is a good garden tip whether you plant the herbs in container gardens or in the ground.
Herbs are natural insect repellents but if you have to treat for pests be sure you use a non toxic treatment since you will be eating your harvest. Marigolds are a natural repellent so you may want to plant of few of these flowers. Planting companion plants is how most Shakespearian gardens were done.
Harvest can begin as soon as you have several leaves on the herb. It is best to cut your herbs before they begin to flower for the best flavor. This is when the most oils are stored in the leaves. Wait until any morning dew has dissipated before cutting but harvest before the full sun is out. You can cut your herbs right before you wish to use them. If the stems are tender these too can be used in your recipes.
If you have an abundant harvest you can freeze or dry the herbs. Dry them by hanging them upside down, in a bunch tied together, in a warm and dark place. You can microwave them by placing them between two paper towels and microwaving for 2 minutes. Put them in an air tight container, they will last up to 1 year.
Freezing the bounty of your herb garden will let them last a little longer, a year to year and a half. Chop up the herbs and place on a sheet of wax paper. Freeze for at least 2 hours. Another method is to put the herbs in ice cube trays with water. Freeze until firm, pop them out and put them in to zip lock bags. When ever you need the herbs for soups, stews or sauces, just throw in an herb ice cube.
